Course objectives
After the completion of the course the students will be able to:
- understand the character of contemporary German philosophy,
- explain the fundamental features of social and political philosophy in contemporary Germany,
- delineate the major distinctions between particular thinkers and their understanding of social and political problems - social justice, democracy, equality, global inequality, the contribution of citizen to political power, civic society etc.
- interpret rationally the conceptions of social philosophy of A. Honneth, U. Beck and P. Sloterdijk
Syllabus
  • 1. The character of social philosophy. 2. The place of social and political philosophy in the context of German philosophy. 3. The main proponents of contemporary social and political philosophy. 4. The main concepts of contemporary social philosophy. 5. The problem of recognition and justice according to A. Honneth 6. The sui juris citizen in the context of globalization (individual vs. supranational capital) 7. Democracy and global justice 8. Ulrich Beck - theory of Second Modernity 9. Risk society 10. The problem of power, national states and global order 11. P. Sloterdijk - inside capitalism 12. Social economic crisis as a crisis of neo-liberal system.

written essay, minimum 5 norm pages themes assigned or selected by students deadline two weeks before the date of exam, essays handed in later will be ignored oral exam in the form of discussion on the supplied essay.
