Course objectives
The course is concerned with the Greek prose and poetry from its beginnings to the Roman Period (in accordance with the standard periodization). At completion of the course the students:
- can distinguish relevant genres of Greek prose
- can name the prominent figures of the genres in question
- are also informed about the relevant secondary literature

  • 1. Periodization of the Ancient Greek literature; secondary literature; Papyrus, parchment, codices.
  • 2. Historiography of the Archaic Period
  • 3.-5. Pre-Socratic Philosophy
  • 6.-8 Historiography and oratory of the Classical Period
  • 9.-10. Philosophy of the Classical Period
  • 11.-12. Greek scientific literature
  • 13. Ancient Greek novel

Teaching methods
Lectures 1½ hours per week. Homeworks: reading discussed texts.
Assessment methods
Individual reading during the semester and written test at the end of semester. Regular attendance and participation in the course is recommended. The students who miss some lectures take a further oral examination apart from written test.
