- Course objectives
- Upon successfull completion of the course, students will be able to: describe, analyze and read correctly different types of Latin verses, which appear in the classical poetry such as hexameters, pentameters hendecasyllables etc. Selected poems of Ovidius and Catullus will be read. The course participants will have a broader and more solid knowledge about the literary and social context of the Latin classical poetry, will be able to understand, comment, analyze and appreciate these ancient texts. The students will be further able to evaluate critically various commentaries and secondary literature concerning these texts. See http://www.phil.muni.cz/elf/

- Teaching methods
- The course includes practice with focus on correct translation and interpretation of the Latin original poetic texts into Czech language. Regular work at home weekly is expected. Special attention will be paid to the use of modern commentaries and to the knowledge of Ancient mythology and reality.phraseology. Regular work at home is exspected weekly, which consists in translating from Czecht into Latin. Each student must present a coursework dealing with the specific problems of Latin elegy.
- Assessment methods
- The course is taught as both lectures and seminars. A paper and its oral delivery on the topic sleected during the semester. At the end, written and oral final examination: analysis of the metre of a poem selected and its adequate translation from Latin. Active participation at the classes is expected also.
