- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce the most significant studies that influenced both the theory and practice of psychology. Students should strenghten their knowledge of methodology through reading primamry research studies. Critical thinking should be cultivated in discussions and writing assignments.
- Syllabus
- 1. Social psychology: Behavioral study of obedience (Milgram, 1963); A study of prisoners and guards in a simulated prison (Haney, Banks, & Zimbardo, 1973). 2. Biological and comparative psychology: Transmission of aggression through imitation of aggressive models (Bandura, Ross, & Ross, 1961); Hemisphere deconnection and unity in conscious awareness (Sperry, 1968). 3. Diversity: Sex reassignments at birth: a long term review and clinical implications (Diamond & Sigmundson, 1997); Why are children in the same family so different from one another? (Plomin & Daniels, 1987) 4. Developmental psychology: Love in infant monkeys (Harlow, 1959); Conditioned emotional reactions (Watson, 1920). 5. Cognitive psychology: Reconstruction of automobile destruction: an example of the interaction between language and memory (Loftus & Palmer, 1974); Retrieval time from semantic memory (Collins & Quillian, 1969). 6. Psychological methods: The effect of experimenter bias on the performance of the albino rat (Rosenthal & fode, 1963).

- Assessment methods
- 1) Each student, either alone, or in pairs, will choose three classical studies, and will prepare presentations on the lectures (he/she has to present at least once alone and at least once in pair). The offer is available to the students in a shared table. 2) Each student will chose one from a broad offer of recent studies and write a popular version of the study. Students provide feedback each other (each students provides feedbact to two other students). 3) Students will be devided to three groups and will prepare a proposal for direct replication of a selected study, and may also collect data and write a research report.
