Course objectives
The aim of this course is to present Italian literature for children in the 19th and 20th centuries in its literary, historical and cultural contexts.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the Italian literary and historical background of the 19th and 20th centuries up to the contemporary age. Children literature inside Italian literary criticism. Journals and comics for children. We will read short stories and extracts from children books written by Collodi, De Amicis, Vamba, Salgari, Calvino, Rodari, Piumini, Pitzorno. We will also analyze the language aspect of the texts.

Teaching methods
Lectures and class discussion: we will read and discuss some novels (extracts) and short stories together with video materials.
Assessment methods
Once enrolled in the course, attendance is mandatory (minimum 70%). Students will be asked to write at least two short essays to be delivered (printed or electronic version) by the end of November. "Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca": full reading required. Examination - written.
