- Course objectives
- The main aim of the course is to introduce natural environment, landscape, society, economy and culture in Mediterranean region and surroundings. The course is fundamental input into the problém, introduces Medterranean in whole (geographical region) and discusses its uniting points and simultaneously its inner differentiation.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction: organisation of course. Mediterranean as natural, historical, cultural, political region? Delimitation of area. Subregions (inner differentiation) of Mediterranean.
- 2. Natural conditions: types of climate: hydrology of Mediterranean.
- 3. Natural conditions: relief; tectonics and orogenesis; natural hazards; inland hydrology.
- 4. Landscape: biogeographical region, historical development of landscape.
- 5. Historical geography of Mediterranean, historical regions, centres of power in antiquity, in the Middle Ages and early modern times.
- 6. Population: religious and ethnic structure. Population development from the middle of 20th century. Current demographic development in Mediterranean compared with another world macroregions, inner differentiation of demographic development in Mediterranean and in chosen countries.
- 7. Settlement and urbanisation: types of settlement, degree of urbanisation, main agglomeration. Educational and economic structure of population.
- 8. Economy: economic development (Hospodářství: ekonomický rozvoj (GDP and human development index) with comparison with another macroregions, inner differentiation of Mediterranean; occurence of poverty; structure of economy.
- 9. Economy: mineral materials; agricultural regions and main industrial centres.
- 10. Tourism: sense of tourism in economy, specialization of tourism, main destinations.
- 11. Political structure: history of state-formation in modern times;politic structure - history; current politic systems: electoral systems.
- 12. Political conflicts: Cyprus, Palestine, Libya, Western Sahara.
- 13. Political and economical integration of Mediterranean. Relations with EU.

- Teaching methods
- A combination of lectures, seminars, readings and a group presentations (a seminar project). Seminars typically have a nature of either class discussion or a presentation of a seminar project (in group).
