Course objectives
The course offers a systematic overview of the basic phenomena of Modern Greek phonology, morphology and syntax. The main goal of the seminar is to deepen the students' knowledge of vocabulary and grammar that they learned about during their bachelor studies and also to enable them to discuss and write about the topics dealt with in the seminar. Another aim of the course is to enable students to understand Modern Greek texts and to translate texts from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa. CEFR B1
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course student will be able to:
- understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure;
- communicate on given topics;
- write simple coherent texts on topics discussed in the course or on topics of his interest;
- translate simple texts form Modern Greek to Czech and vice versa.
Syllabus
  • Grammar: revision of grammatical phenomena taught in the bachelor´s programme, Ellinika Tora 2+2, lesson 7 - 12. Verbs 1st and 2nd conjugation — complex overview, irregular verbs, irregular nouns, reflexive, relative, indefinite, demonstrative pronouns, deponent and reflexive verbs
  • Topics: social relations, travelling, media, character.
  • Writing.
  • Reading Modern Greek texts.
  • Speaking, listening.

Teaching methods
The course is in the form of a seminar. Homework is required during the semester - students prepare assigned grammatical exercises and short translations from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa.
Assessment methods
The requirement for obtaining the credit: passing the final written test (min 70 %) and an oral examination, having 70% or higher attendance and active participation during the lectures.
