- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to present a basic overview of ancient political, economic and cultural history from the beginnings in the Near East, Egypt and the Levant, through the oldest civilizations of European ancient history, i. e. the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, to the history of ancient Greece.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of this course the student will have a general knowledge of the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Syro-Palestine, the Aegean cultures and Ancient Greece;
- he/she will be able to evaluate the importance of archeology for the research of these civilisations;
- he/she will be able to evaluate the importance of history for the analysis of archeological evidence - Syllabus
- 1) The turning points of ancient history; scripture and writing systems
- 2) Chronology of ancient history; types of states, classical and oriental slavery
- 3) The state, society, religion and culture of the Sumerians
- 4) The development of states in Mesopotamia
- 5) The state, society, religion and culture of Ancient Egypt
- 6) The Phoenicians, the land of Canaan and the Hebrews
- 7) The importance of archeology for the knowledge about the Minoan and Mycenaean culture
- 8) The archeology and the Dark Ages of Greece
- 9) The development of poleis in the Archaic period of Greece
- 10) Athens on the way from oligarchy to democracy
- 11) Sparta and its society of "men of equal status"
- 12) Classical period of Greek history
- 13) Crisis of poleis and the hegemony of Macedonia; the Hellenistic period
