Course objectives

The interpretation of German literature from Naturalism to Expressionism. The authors of "Young Vienna", Thomas and Heinrich Mann, prose writing around 1900, drama around 1900, lyric poetry around 1900, nonsense poetry by Morgenstern, Expressionism - journals and manifestos, expressionistic poetry, expressionistic drama, expressionistic prose writing.

Learning outcomes

At the End of the seminar the student will be qualified:
- to contextualise literary works of this epoch from a socio-historical and stylistic perspective and to describe their innovative potential;
- explain and apply the necessary terms;
- to formulate a critical assessment of literary and ideological tendencies;
- describe the relationship between the publishing and press landscape, the profile of important literary journals and the work of authors;
- know the vocabulary of the required reading;
- write a term paper on a topic specified by the seminar leader;

Teaching methods

The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge. It also uses collective work, in-class discussions and individual work of students.

Assessment methods

If you have passed a credit test on materials you have read, actively participated in seminars and written an essay to a topic agreed with the seminar leader, you will obtaim 2 ECTS.
