- Course objectives
- The goal of the block course is to present the beginnings of the spread of Christianity in Vietnam and Korea in the context of the early missions in China and East Asia.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, the student should know the beginnings of the Christian missions in East Asia, understand the contact of the different cultures and will be prepared for further study in more specialised courses.
- Syllabus
- 1. Missionary activity of the Catholic Church from 16th to 18th century: major institutions (Propaganda Fide, Society of Jesus, Paris Foreign Missions Society), key figures (St. Francis Xavier, Matteo Ricci, Michele Ruggieri, Alessandro Valignano…), mission countries (China, India, Japan, the Philippines, South America), the political context.
- 2. Christianity in Vietnam from the arrival of the first missionaries to the period of Pierre Pigneau de Béhaine.
- 3. Christianity in Korea from the first contacts to the legalisation.
- 4. The early spread of Christianity in East Asia as an instance of cultural contact (the Chinese Rites controversy, the Confucian criticism of Christianity in China and Korea, the influence of the traditional religions and philosophical systems on the reception of Christianity).
- 5. An outline of the later development. The missionary activities of the other Christian churches.
