- Course objectives
- The goal of the course is to acquire basic knowledge about Japanese literature from the point of view of its periodization, genres and authorial approaches. The course has a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part provides the basic overview. Based on that, the students will subsequently discuss the literary works they have read, thus enhancing the theoretical knowledge in practice.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will have the elementary knowledge of Japanese literature, its periods, genres and authorial approaches.
The student will appreciate the direct insight by reading and will have a clear idea of the internal interrelatedness of Japanese literature, identifies its periods, genres and important authors and is aware of the mutual relationships between works of literature, as well as their relation to other non-literary spheres like the role of the period and ambience, authorial intention, influences and receptions, and limitations. - Syllabus

- Teaching methods
- The basic structure of the course is chronological, with further emphasis on diachronic relations of intertextual and contextual character. The focus is on pre-modern literature. The attendance on the sessions is compulsory.

- The subject will not be open regularly every year, but minimum once in two years. Part of the course is sefl-study - reading - of selected works, including the first part of the Tale of Genji, and writing essays on the reading.
