Course objectives
The goal of the course is to acquire basic knowledge about Japanese literature from the point of view of its periodization, genres and authorial approaches. The course has a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part provides the basic overview. Based on that, the students will subsequently discuss the literary works they have read, thus enhancing the theoretical knowledge in practice.
Learning outcomes
Student after finishing the course:
has the elementary knowledge of Japanese literature, its periods, genres and authorial approaches.
is able to appreciate the direct insight by reading;
has a clear idea of the internal interrelatedness of Japanese literature;
identifies its periods, genres and important authors;
is aware of the mutual relationships between works of literature, as well as their relation to other non-literary spheres like the role of the period and ambience, authorial intention, influences and receptions, and limitations.

  • 6. Turning back to the gold Heian times (Kamakura).
  • 7. New prestigeous forms for the new shogunate (Muromachi).
  • 8. Literature for townspeople. (Edo).
  • 9. Old and new (Edo, Meiji).
  • 10. After the war.
  • 11. Viewing of the latest film representation of The Tale of Genji.

Teaching methods
The basic structure of the course is chronological, with further emphasis on diachronic relations of intertextual and contextual character. The focus is on pre-modern literature. The attendance on the sessions is compulsory.
Assessment methods
The assessment of the presentation, partial tests and final oral examination from the material done during the term will yield the final grade.
