Course objectives
The aim of the course is: to teach the students how to identify (in detail) all of the basic morphological and syntactical elements which are included in the prescribed lecture notes, appearing in a coherent text written in Classical Latin; to exercise basic grammatical rules of Classical Latin and selected Latin vocabulary; to teach the students how to translate an unknown Latin text of intermediate difficulty into Czech (with the assistance of a dictionary).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to: identify and describe (in detail) all of the basic morphological and syntactical elements which are included in the prescribed lecture notes, appearing in a coherent text written in Classical Latin; apply basic grammatical rules of Classical Latin; translate an unknown Latin text of intermediate difficulty into Czech (with the assistance of a dictionary). Students will also be required to master selected Latin vocabulary.
Syllabus
  • Ablative absolute; indicative of the pluperfect and future perfect; future participles and periphrastic conjugation; perfect and future infinitive; direct and indirect questions; nominative plus infinitive construction; perfect and pluperfect subjunctive and their use in sentences; cum historicum; conditional sentences; optative mood; time clauses; reason clauses; subjunctive consecution; gerunds; gerundives; selected irregular verbs; semi-deponent verbs; selected Latin vocabulary; revision and practical application of the topics covered during the previous two Latin courses (translations of shorter coherent texts).

50% lecture 50% seminar
Assessment methods
Requirements for passing the examination: regular class attendance (75%); short written test during the semester and final written test (both at least 65%), in which the knowledge of the grammar explained in the prescribed lecture notes will be examined – in the form of a translation of sentences and grammatical exercises. Final oral exam – translation of a short, unknown Latin text with the assistance of a dictionary, and explanation of grammatical elements contained in the text.
