Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Explanations in this course are focused on graphical, phonological and morphological aspects of Old Church Slavonic texts. Explanations also deal with the divergent development of Proto-Slavonic morphology leading to early stages of contemporary Slavonic languages. The main aim of the course is to provide knowledge of Old Church Slavonic morphological structures, especially by means of practical exercises and analyses of Old Church Slavonic texts.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to read, interpret and transliterate Old Church Slavonic texts written in Cyrillic alphabet,
- to apply phonological changes, creating specific Old Church Slavonic inflected forms,
- to identify grammatical categories of specific Old Church Slavonic inflected forms,
- to analyze the inner structure of specific Old Church Slavonic inflected forms,
- to explain main developmental tendencies of Old Church Slavonic inflected and functional morphology,
- to compare differences among contemporary Slavonic languages on the basis of Proto-Slavonic dialects split,
- to describe the individual stages of development of Old Church Slavonic literature, including significant sources.

  • 1. System of the Slavonic declension, noun stems.
  • 2. Declension of adjectives (nominal declension X compound declension).
  • 3. Comparative (derivation and declension).
  • 4. Declension of pronouns.
  • 5. Declension of numerals.
  • 6. Conjugation – thematic/ athematic verbs.
  • 7. Present tense.
  • 8. Imperative mood.
  • 9. Aorist tense.
  • 10. Imperfect tense.
  • 11. Infinitive and supine.
  • 12. Participle.
  • 13. Periphrastic verbal forms.

Teaching methods
The methods used include lectures, class discussions, homework (transliteration and language analyses of concrete texts in Cyrillic), reading assigned scholarly materials, drills (Old Church Slavonic morphology). The seminars continuously check students’ abilities, knowledge and skills acquired during their individual preparations. Electronic study materials in a separate module are a regular part of the course.
Assessment methods
To succeed in the exam, 1. regular attendance and active articipation in classes is necessary (during the term, students’ knowledge is continuously checked in both oral and written forms), 2. complete also the e-learning module(it is a necessary prerequisite to the exam), 3. it is necessary to succeed in the final exam, the exam consists of a written part and of an oral part. A/ The written part contains analysis of an Old Church Slavonic text, checking the knowledge of Old Church Slavonic phonology, morphology and diachronic connections concerning the development of Slavonic languages; to succeed in this part, it is necessary to reach at least 70% of the points. B/ To take the oral part of the exam, it is necessary to succeed in the written part. The subject of the oral exam are topics concerning the origin, development and present day state of Slavonic languages, characteristic linguistic features of Old Church Slavonic and features relating to its phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary and history of Old Church Slavonic literature – to succeed in the oral part, it is necessary to answer correctly at least 70% of the questions.
