Course objectives

The main aim of the course is to introduce the key themes of aesthetics as a natural part of the history of aesthetics, with an emphasis on the conscious pursuit of parallels in later periods. Students develop the ability to reflect on problems of art with respect to axiology and the possibilities of reasoned interpretation in relation to the history of aesthetics. Through self-created critiques and reviews of currently staged works of art and productions (art exhibitions, books, theatre performances, etc.), students will both become familiar with the argumentative system of particular theoretical contributions from the history of aesthetics, and will acquire and deepen their skills in working with text from authorial production to basic editorial tasks. The results will be published in a student journal posted on the Aesthetics Seminar website.

Students will learn and acquire the current approaches, methods and concepts in use and practice.

Syllabus

• 1/presentation of the theoretical framework of the history of aesthetics 2/selection and distribution of specific material for review (each student brings a topic for review of his/her own choice, or according to a common choice) 3/acquaintance with the artwork/event, relevant research work, work on the critique/review 4/presentation of results, joint discussion, evaluation. Each student will produce 3 critiques during the one-semester course, from which, after a joint discussion and suggesting possible modifications, the ones to be published in the journal of student work will be selected (2 issues in 1 year). Students will participate in the editing of the texts selected for publication. The course participants will deepen the theoretical knowledge of the history of aesthetics acquired in previous studies, and will attempt to apply basic theoretical theses in relation to actual artistic material.
