- Course objectives
- The main goal of this course is to improve students' speaking skills. Using various interactive forms of work, they practice grammar and work on pronunciation and prosody. In addition, vocabulary is expanded and consolidated.
Authentic audiovisual material in Dutch-Dutch and Belgian-Dutch is used in order that students train listening skills and acquire knowledge about (current) topics from the Netherlands and Flanders. - Learning outcomes
- Students are able to use the correct word order (inversion, in the subclause,...) in speaking situations
Other basic grammatical rules (e.g. conjugation of (irregular) verbs, inflection of adjectives) are also applied
They can express themselves on different topics in various (everyday) situations
They are able to give a short, coherent presentation using transition signals

- This course covers a variety of topics and partially draws on the MOOC Gent in gedichten, which consists of the following sections:
- 1. City walk (exploration of the city of Ghent + Jacob van Artevelde)
- 2. Ghent and me (the Gravensteen + the Ghent dialect)
- 3. My man the city (the Vooruit + Belgian Dutch colloquial language)
- 4. Agnus dei (famous Ghent dishes + the Ghent altarpiece)
- 5. Ghent (Richard Minne + literature in Ghent)

- Teaching methods
- At home students prepare sections in the MOOC Gent in gedichten (Ghent in poems) and tasks around authentic material (poems, articles, videos, podcasts); during lectures, this is followed up with targeted, interactive tasks focusing on speaking and conversation skills
- Assessment methods
- The purpose of this course is to encourage speaking and practice speaking skills. Attendance and active participation is therefore required (max. 1 absence is allowed). Students' performance will be evaluated on an ongoing basis.
In preparation for the lectures, students perform mandatory tasks:
They listen to a podcast, watch a video or go through part of the MOOC Ghent in poems.
During the semester, they prepare two short presentations in which they present “linguistic input” (a podcast, vlog, video,...) within a given theme.
As a final assignment, they make a quiz in small groups on the topics and vocabulary covered during the semester. - Language of instruction
