The course is aimed at complete beginners in Greek. Acquaintance with New Testament texts is welcome but not required.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquire the ability to read the New Testament in the original language using a dictionary, grammar tables and other aids.
The course is designed for all students who are interested in becoming more deeply familiar with New Testament texts.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the first semester, the student will:
- be able to read the simpler Gospel texts using a dictionary, grammar charts and other aids;
- have a passive knowledge of the most basic vocabulary of the New Testament;
- be familiar with the most basic grammar of New Testament Greek.
Syllabus
  • 1. Alphabet. Greek syllables. Grammatical nominal categories. Vocabulary.
  • 2. Introduction to nominal morphology. Vocabulary.
  • 3. Introduction to verb morphology. Verbal categories, Greek verb form structure, conjugation types, present tense, imperative and infinitive active. Vocabulary.
  • 4. Practice and reading of Greek New Testament text with teacher's assistance. Vocabulary.
  • 5. Practice and reading of Greek New Testament text with teacher's assistance.
  • 6. Present tense, imperative and infinitive mediopassive. Vocabulary.
  • 7. Practice and reading of the Greek New Testament text with the help of the teacher.
  • 8. Nouns; the name Jesus. Vocabulary.
  • 9. Practice and reading of Greek New Testament text with teacher's assistance.
  • 10. Adjectives, pronouns. Vocabulary.
  • 11. Practice and reading of Greek New Testament text with teacher's assistance.
  • 12. Imperfect.
  • 13. Practice and reading of the Greek New Testament text with the help of the teacher.

Teaching methods
Study of grammar and vocabulary, reading of New Testament texts in the original, homework consisting of translation of sentences and phrases from the New Testament.
Assessment methods
Written test consisting of 1) translation of the New Testament text using a dictionary, 2) translation of prepared sentences and phrases, 3) Greek grammar test.
