Course objectives
doc. Kudrnáč: The seminar is outlined as a complementation of a lecture on 19th century Czech literature. The sessions are devoted to authors and problems of Czech literature in a comparative perspective, in relation to Czech literature of different periods as well as in relation to other literatures.
Mgr. Fránek: This seminary is focused on basic developement tendencies in the 19th century Czech literature - from the beginnings of the "Revival Period" untill 1880s (with regard to european context). The lecture will be based on analysis of particular works typical for certain periods.
prof. Fiala: The seminar is focused on humour and satire in the Czech literature of the 19th century.
Syllabus
  • doc. Kudrnáč: After an introduction to the reference literature of the field, the sessions will be devoted to pre-romantism in poetry, prose and drama; to romanticism, biedermeier, the beginnings of realism during the "Revival Period", the formation and work of the Máj generation, the Lumír and Ruch model, variations in realistic prose in the second half of the 19th century, the development of realistic drama in the second half of the 19th century, the development of historical prose, the rise of neoromanticism and art nouveau at the end of the 19th century, and to literary criticism (beginning in the Revival Period).
  • Mgr. Fránek: Topics of this course are following: intoduction into problematics and secondary literature, beginnings of the "Revival Period" and an argument about its character, delimitation of trends classicism, pre-romantism, romanticism, biedermeier and identification of their influences in poetry, prose and drama, the Máj generation, the Lumír and Ruch model, features of realism in prose and drama of the second half of the 19th century. In this seminar will be discussed cultural-historical context in general and also acceptance of studied works by people of those times.
  • prof. Fiala: The seminar is focused on humour and satire in the Czech literature of the 19th century, especially on the humouristic and satiric works of Š. Hněvkovský, F. L. Čelakovský, K. Havlíček Borovský, J. Neruda, S. Čech, V. Rais a I. Hermann. The rest of seminar time is devoted to the analyses of the selectes parts of Czech literary texts of 19th century with the accent on interpretations of the way of contemporary living and the defining of poetics particularities in this literature; by the poetry with the accent on the versologic analysis.

Požadavky pro ukončení semináře: seminární práce, aktivní účast. Požadavky ke zkoušce: 1. Výklad historického vývoje literatury příslušného období, v rozsahu učebnice Lehár, Jan a kol.: Česká literatura od počátků k dnešku. 2. Znalost doporučené primární literatury. 3. Analýza přečtených literárních děl.
