- Course objectives
- The seminar is focused on the history and development of the Czech language from 1620 to 1775, including its stylistic differentiation and specific features of the Czech language in the Czech lands and abroad. Attention is paid also to analysis of texts belonging to the particular period.
- Syllabus
- 1. Development of opinions on Baroque Czech from the times of J. Dobrovský to the present. 2. Social, political and reigious factors influencing the position of standard language in the post-1620 period 3. Stratification of the period, relevant sources. 4. General characterization of Standard Czech in the particular period. 5. Development of the Czech language in the catholic (home) and protestant (exile) communities. 6. Grammar books, dictionaries and textbooks of the baroque period, defences of the language, purism, neologisms. 7. Institutional background of teaching Czech. 8. Publishers' activities. 9. "Bible svatováclavská" and its language. 10. Language of religion. 11. Language of poetry/songs. 12. Language of administration. 13. Language of historiography. 14. Language of journalistics. 15. Language of texts belonging to low style.
