Course objectives
In the seminar we will read and intrepret together a variety of texts from old Czech literature of different genres (spiritual song, legend, chronicle) and times (1Oth to 18the century), which are connected through the theme of St. Václav. Thus we will not be interested in "historic", but "literary" St. Václav (as a subject in literary text). We will attempt at following varieties of the St. Václav myth and we will note their part in forming and changing the St. Václav tradition, which will form a basis for our discussion concerning the nature of the link between literature and historical memory as well as the meaning of historical consciousness and tradition in general.
