Course objectives

ENGLISH FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXAM FOR FF DOCTORAL STUDENTS:___ Students are obliged to either (1) write a test organized by the Language Education Centre for the Faculty of Arts, MU Brno (FF CJV), or (2) have the exam recognized on the basis of an exam that was done before, or on the basis of appropriate documentation (such as a publication in the foreign language; see below). The English exam (IS registration code: CJV_D_A) is regularly conducted three times a year: during exam periods in January, June and September. It is a written exam. Students must register at least 3 working days before the exam date. Exam registration involves (1) signing up in IS and (2) a list of 5 topics (for an essay that would be about 4 standard pages long) that should be sent to FF/FSS CJV. Each topic must include a brief synopsis of about 5 lines, or 5 sentences, or 5 points. The topics must connect to the theme of the student’s dissertation and must be signed by the student’s ADVISOR in order to be accepted. At the actual sitting of the exam, the examiner will select one of the proposed topics.___ RECOGNITION OF EXAM is possible if one of the following is provided: (1) International language certificates at the C1 level of CEF (Common European Framework) i.e., CAE, Pitman ESOL Higher Intermediate, TOEIC score 701-910, BEC Higher, TOEFL IBT score 92-120 (or CBT 237-300 or PBT 580-680), IELTS score 6.5-7, or higher (2) the General State Language Exam, (3) a master’s degree in English language, (4) a degree obtained from a foreign university where the study language was English, or (5) PUBLICATIONS (the student’s name must be written as the main author or first co-author in all of the following cases): book, lecture, article; or PRESENTATION at a conference held in English (the student’s name must be written as the main AUTHOR AND PRESENTER; the student must also submit a published abstract of the presentation and a written version of the presentation itself); a rejected unpublished article (the student must also submit the text and the rejection explanation).___ Please send your correspondence to Šárka Roušava at rousava@fss.muni.cz. ___ GENERAL WRITTEN EXAM PARAMETERS: (1) length is about 4 standard pages (i.e. 7200 characters); (2) formal style corresponding to academic writing (title, introduction, main body, conclusion); (3) use of academic conventions when citing sources___ STYLE AND ORGANIZATION: (1) clear argumentation expressed in paragraphs; (2) paragraphs are logically and coherently sequenced; (3) use of text construction principles; (4) formal register___ LANGUAGE SKILLS: (1) use of a wide grammatical range suitable for academic writing (appropriate tenses, modal verbs); (2) precise grammatical structures; (3) ability to form compound and complex sentences (not only simple sentences)___ VOCABULARY: (1) relevant vocabulary and technical terminology; (2) precise use of expressions, idioms, and phrases suitable for academic writing; (3) conjunctions and joining phrases appropriate to formal writing___ SOURCES: the student may bring to the exam some written out citations, a list of literature used, and technical and general dictionaries (all of which can be checked by the examiner).

Assessment methods (in Czech)

Informace ke zkouškám z cizích jazyků v rámci doktorského studia V rámci doktorského studia jsou studenti povinni buď složit zkoušky, které organizuje Centrum jazykového vzdělávání na FF a FSS MU v Brně (CJV), nebo si mohou zkoušku nechat uznat na základě zkoušky složené dříve nebo na základě dostatečně průkazných dokumentů (např. publikace v cizím jazyce, podrobnosti níže). Zkouška z anglického jazyka (kód pro zápis do IS je CJV_D_A) se vypisuje zpravidla 3x ročně ve zkušebních termínech: leden, červen, září. Zkouška má písemný charakter. Ke zkoušce se studenti přihlašují nejpozději 3 pracovní dny před termínem. Za přihlášku je považována registrace ke zkoušce v IS a seznam 5ti témat na esej v rozsahu cca 4 normostran zaslaný na oddělení FF/FSS CJV. Každé téma musí obsahovat stručný obsah přibližně na pět řádků, pět vět nebo v pěti bodech. Témata se musí vztahovat k tématu disertační práce studenta a musí být podepsána školitelem, jinak nebudou akceptována. Při samotné zkoušce zkoušející vybírá jedno z navržených témat. Uznat zkoušku je možno v následujících případech: - mezinárodní certifikáty na úrovni ERR C1 (např. CAE, Pitman ESOL Higher Intermediate, TOEIC score 701-910, BEC Higher, TOEFL IBT score 92-120, nebo CBT 237-300, nebo PBT 580-680, IELTS score 6.5-7)_ - všeobecná státní jazyková zkouška - magisterský titul z oboru anglický jazyk - titul získaný na zahraniční univerzitě (studium v angličtině) - publikace: - kniha (kandidát musí být uveden jako první autor nebo první spoluautor) - skripta (kandidát musí být uveden jako první autor nebo první spoluautor) - článek (kandidát musí být uveden jako první autor nebo první spoluautor) - výstup na konferenci vedené v anglickém jazyce (kandidát musí být uveden jako první autor a přednášející; musí předložit publikovaný abstrakt příspěvku a příspěvek v písemné formě) - odmítnutý nepublikovaný článek/text: (kandidát musí být uveden jako první autor a předložit text i důvod zamítnutí) VŠEOBECNÉ PARAMETRY PÍSEMNÉ ZKOUŠKY: 1. určený rozsah (cca 4 normostrany = 7200 znaků); 2. formální stránka odpovídající akademickému textu (název, úvod, hlavní část, závěr); 3. užití akademických konvencí při citování zdrojů; STYL A ORGANIZACE: 1. jasné argumenty vyjádřeny v odstavcích; 2. odstavce členěny do logického a souvislého sledu; 3. užití zásad stavby textu; 4. formální slovní registr; JAZYKOVÉ DOVEDNOSTI 1. využití široké škály gramatických jevů vhodných pro akademický písemný projev (slovesné časy, rody, modální slovesa); 2. přesné užití gramatických struktur; 3. schopnost tvorby souvětí (nejen vět jednoduchých); SLOVNÍ ZÁSOBA 1. relevantní slovní zásoba a odborná terminologie; 2. přesné použití slovních výrazů, idiomů a frází vhodných pro akademický písemný projev; 3. spojovací výrazy adekvátní písemnému projevu; PODKLADY: Ke zkoušce si student může sebou přinést vypsané citace, seznam literatury a odborné i obecné slovníky (k nahlédnutí zkoušejícímu).
