Students, who want to attend the course of Classical Philosophy II, are expected to have already attended the course of Classical Philosophy I. Exception is possible in individual cases.

Course objectives
The aim of the course of Classical Philosophy II. is to make students acquainted with the evolution of Ancient philosophy from Aristotle till the end of Antiquity.
At the end of this course, students should be able to characterize the filosophical writings of Aristotle, including their literal-critical specification (arguments and proofs, inductive reasoning, defitions); ennumerate and classify the post-Aristotelian philosophers by schools; recognize and describe the influence of Christianity on the late ancient philosophers and the processes of cultural change from Ancient times to the Middle Ages.
Syllabus
  • 1.-5. Aristoteles: a) life, work, relationship to Plato; b) Aristoteles' contribution to metaphysics, fysics, logic, etics, politics and the literature critics; c) Aristoteles' influence on the next generations of philosophers in Classical and Medieval Age.
  • 6.-8. Helenism and it's philosophical schools: a) scepticism; b) epicureanism; c) stoic philosophy.
  • 9. Religious elements in philosophy at the turn of ages.
  • 10. Neoplatonical philosophy.
  • 11. Evolution of the christian philosophy - apologetics, patristics.
  • 12. Aurelius Augustinus.
  • 13. Boëthius and the turn to middle-age philosophy.

Assessment methods
Attendance and participation in the course (min. 75%). Current reading of presented philosophical texts. At the end of the course, oral testing in the form of "symposial agon". Students can also choose another way of obtaining credits: written comparison of the Plato's and Aristotle's aproaches to one freely chosen topic.
