Course objectives
The main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
to understand selected passages of Horace's work;
to interpret the text from the linguistic point of view, to be capable of its textual criticism, to intepret the content of the text on different levels (especially historical and cultural). Students will gain deeper knowledge of the socio-historical context in which the text is set.
After completing this course, student is able to use information gained in this and other courses to comment on historical and literary context of Petronius' works (on elementary level);
to analyze literary devices used in the work.

  • Introduction - Horace's works in literary and historical context.
  • Personality of the author.
  • Greek and Roman lyric.
  • Imitation of Greek literary models in Horace's works.
  • Reading and translation of selected Horace's poetry.
  • Metrical analysis of poems, types of metres used in Horace's works.
  • Elements of Vulgar Latin in Horace's poetry.
  • Horace as a model for successive poets.

Individual preparation outside classroom and active participation on the seminar is expected. The credit is awarded for the interpretation of a selected text from the author.

Credit evaluation note: Pro studenty doktorského studia (latinská medievistika) platí počet kreditů 10.
