Course objectives
Our senses work so well, so fast and so effortlessly, that we tend to take them for granted. We like to think that perception is some kind of "direct" representation of reality. The senses' successes obscure the incredibly complex processes that make it possible for us to detect, identify, and manipulate objects in our environment. Thus how do we see? How does the brain make sense of all the sensory inputs it gets to produce the rich perceptual world? Through lectures and discussions, we will explore how we acquire, process and use information about objects and events in our environments. Although our main focus will be on the sensory processes of normal, healthy, adult humans living in western civilization, the course makes important use of work with non-human animals, very young or very old humans, humans with damaged brain.
