Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to apply Popovič's model of shifts in translation and assess shifts in translations by others as well as their own translations. They will have acquired basic skills for dealing with style in texts. Students will also have analyzed their translation products using Gile's sequential model and will have inferred where they have scope for improvement of their own translation skills. They will have some practice in translating economic texts. They will have acquired some skills for reducing interference in their translations.
Syllabus
  • (1) Shifts in translation, Popovič's model. Translation analysis practice.
    (2) Style in literary and non-literary translation. Translation analysis practice. Translation practice.
    (3) The translation process. Gile's sequential model of translation - application. Self-assessment and its implications.
    (4) Interference in translation. Self-assessment and its implications.
    (5) Selected issues in non-literary practice.
Teaching methods
Home readings, translation analysis, translation assignments to be completed at home, class discussion, online discussion, self-assessment.
Assessment methods
1) A sit-in translation exam.
2) a take-home translation exam - a translation plus a commentary. Self-assessment focusing on particular aspects of students' translation products.
3) Translation submissions during the semester.
