Course objectives
At the end of this course students should be able
- to identify translation problems and skills needed for resolving them in various types of texts;
- to assess their own translation skills realistically and devise ways of their further development;
- make reasoned and well-argued judgements about translations from English into Czech;
- to place Czech and Slovak thinking about translation in the context of other translation theories.
Syllabus
  • 1) Translation and society, translation and norms, translation studies as a discipline.
    2) Translation criticism – metodology, reflection, examples.
    3) Translation as a profession, translation skills and competencies.
    4) Selected issues in non-literary translation. Dictionaries and tools for translators. EU translation.
    5) Selected issues in audio-visual translation and literary translation.

Teaching methods
Home readings, translation assignments to be completed at home, class discussion, online discussion, team projects.
Assessment methods
The final exam consists of two parts: 1) a sit-in exam in translation to verify acquisition of basic translation skills at the Master’s level; and 2) a final essay on a topic of students’ own choice from among the topics covered during the semester. The essay may have different forms such as classical argumentative essay, an extended translation review, a terminological glossary etc. The exact form of the essay is to be agreed with the teacher/s prior to the exam period. Completing the course successfully requires attending the classes, submitting assignments (on Elf) in due time and participating in class and online discussions actively.
