- Course objectives
- The introduction to the history of sculpture of the 19th century. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify and discuss within their historical framework: major movements; important sculptures; major sculptors.
- Syllabus
- The course will treat sculpture as part of the larger process of modernization of the Europe, e.g. place of sculpture in the formation of national identities and the articulation of national histories (nationalism and historism; role of the modern monuments and memorials, portraiture etc.)
- The sculpture of the classicist period - Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), Antonio Canova (1757-1822), Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850), the spread of classicism
- Sculpture in the days of romanticism and realism - Francois Rude (1784-1855), Barye, Daumier, Dantan and others
- Sculpture in the third quarter of the 19th century - Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-75), the spread of naturalism
- The return to form - Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).
