- Course objectives
- At the end of the course, the student should:
- have a thorough idea of the phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical development of Italian
- have an understanding of the historical and cultural context of this development
- be able to use his knowledge while analyzing and describing specific texts
- be in a position to explain main issues of contemporary Italian against diachronic background. - Syllabus
- The main topics of the course are as follows:
- - the linguistic situation in the Italian peninsula after 476 A.D.;
- from Vulgar Latin to Italian;
- - the development of the Italian language from its birth in the 9th-10th centuries to the early 16th century;
- - main periods of the development of Italian;
- - phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic changes;
- - previous stages of development compared to modern usage;
- - major efforts in establishing norms in Italian;
- - analysis of relevant texts from L'Indovinello veronese to Bembo (seminar).
- Special attention will be paid not only to the correct linguistic interpretation of the text, but also to a deeper understanding of the diacronical method of describing a language and its development.

- Lecture: description and explanation, by the teacher, of the major issues of the discipline (see above). Authentic texts illustrating main phenomena are being studied in the seminar.
