Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain translatology as an interdisciplinary science necessarily demanding a comparative approach; work with information on literary theory (especially poetics and stylistics), comparative studies and linguistics; write paper on the history and criticism of artistic translation; analyse single types of translation and to delve into translation regularities; determinate critical criteria useful for the revival of artistic translation criticism; verify own knowledge and skill by writing and possible publishing of a critical work devoted to some contemporary translations; understand and explain semiotic works by Anton Popovich, Frantishek Mika etc.; use semiotic terminology in own papers; use good literary orientation to find conveniant literary text for translation; use theoretical knowledge in own translation of a short prosaic text (literary sketch,short story, novella, novel).
Syllabus
  • 1. Artistic translation as a historic discipline, problematic of its criticism and its function in national literature. 2. Analysis of the poetics of artistic translation as a way to the individual creative activity. 3. Selection of a piece of art to be translated and its further interpretation. 4. Problematic of artistic translation poetics. Selection and interpretation of a prosaic text, its translation. 5. Poetics of a literary sketch. 6. Practice of functional equivalence of artistic translation in the individual translation of a sketch. 7. Poetics of a short story. 8. Practice of functional equivalence of artistic translation in the individual translation of a short story. 9. Poetics of a novel. 10. Practice of functional equivalence of artistic translation in the individual translation of a chapter from a novel. 11. Problematic of translation of a novel as a complex genre. Arguments for the chosen translation strategy. 12. Summarizing knowledge in the form of an oral colloquium.

Active work during seminars Critical analysis of a translation, its possible publishing Individual translation of a short story or an extract from a larger prosaic text, also with characteristics of the chosen text. Final colloquium to control knowledge and experience in the field of translation.
