- This optional course is aimed at students who have already completed the course CJBB119 and wish to develop further their knowledge of other areas of present-day Czech orthographic norm that are not dealt with in CJBB119 or may be more difficult to acquire (using capital letters, loanwords etc.). The aim is to lead students on the basis of previously acquired and practised knowledge of orthography to be able to identify mistakes in texts, to explain them and to check correct forms in language handbooks, including the internet sources. In seminars, students will also gain additional information about available older and newer relevant sources relating to the orthographic norm.
- Syllabus
- The course will deal e.g. with problems relating to the following topics: capital letters, dash and hyphen, writing time and date, abbreviations, words derived from abbreviations, academic degrees, verbal phrases, syntactic errors, transgressives, declension of nouns of foreign origin, place adjectives, the use of pronouns "svůj" and "jenž" and other minor orthographic issues. Students will also become acquainted with activities of the Institute for the Czech Language, Czech Academy of Sciences (the internet language handbook, linguistic analyses in the Czech television). Previous wors dealing with orthography will be used as inspiration (e.g. works by O. Králík, D. Šlosar, P. Eisner, J.V. Bečka, O. Martincová etc.); the course will also be focused on issues of proof-reading. The order of topics will be created by the teacher, seminar materials will be distributed during the classes.
