Course objectives
The course offers a systematic overview of the basic phenomena of Modern Greek phonology, morphology and syntax. The main aim of the course is to make students familiar with basic grammatical phenomena of Modern Greek language. Students must be able to describe these and apply these when speaking and writing in Modern Greek. Another aim of the course is to enable students to understand more difficult Modern Greek texts and to translate texts from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa.
Syllabus
  • Grammar: Basics of Modern Greek Language, lessons 30-39: 2nd conjugation verbs passive – a detailed survey, perfect passive participle, irregular verbs, irregular substantives, reflexive pronouns, relative pronouns, deponent verbs, reflexive verbs, concessive clauses, declarative clauses, time clauses, clauses of reason, content clauses expressing fear, interrogative clauses, reported speech, sequence of tenses, punctuation, weights and measurements, arithmetic operations, idiomatic usage of certain conjunctions and particles.
  • Essay writing.
  • Reading of Modern Greek texts.

Teaching methods
The course has a form of a seminar and lectures.
Assessment methods
Homework is required during semester – students prepare assigned grammatical exercises and translations from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa, essays on given topics. Requirements for obtaining the credit: passing a written test.
