- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to: define social culture; identify the manifestations of social culture; interpret materials in ethnological context, describe traditional and contemporary rituals from the holistic point of view; formulate the possibilities of research of social culture; compare the development of different societies.
- Syllabus
- General introduction to social culture (tripartite division of traditional folk culture).
- Basic issues of evolution, terminology (matrilocality, patrilocality, polygamy, polyandry, polygyny, initiation, transmission rituals, etc.).
- Family and types of family in historical development (nuclear family, large family).
- Matrimony and forms of marriage.
- Wedding and wedding ceremonies.
- Birth of people.
- Last things of people.
- Annual cycle festivities and holidays.
- Rituals, traditions and festivities connected with crop and harvest.
- Religious year and traditions. Christmas. Easter. Pentecost. The cult of saints as people’s calendar.
