Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: define social culture; identify the manifestations of social culture; interpret materials in ethnological context, describe traditional and contemporary rituals from the holistic point of view; formulate the possibilities of research of social culture; compare the development of different societies.
Syllabus
  • General introduction to social culture (tripartite division of traditional folk culture).
  • Basic issues of evolution, terminology (matrilocality, patrilocality, polygamy, polyandry, polygyny, initiation, transmission rituals, etc.).
  • Family and types of family in historical development (nuclear family, large family).
  • Matrimony and forms of marriage.
  • Wedding and wedding ceremonies.
  • Birth of people.
  • Last things of people.
  • Annual cycle festivities and holidays.
  • Rituals, traditions and festivities connected with crop and harvest.
  • Religious year and traditions. Christmas. Easter. Pentecost. The cult of saints as people’s calendar.
