- Course objectives
- By the end of the class students should be familiar with the basic European publications, concerning the period from the 6th century BC to 1st century AD - including the ancient Greek and Roman authors. It is hoped that students will gain a good understanding of the major issues and interpretation models confronting contemporary archaeology in this period. The student should be able to define and analyse the relations between the Mediterranean in Classical antiquity and the area of La Tène culture, as well as the regional particularities. They will gain an overview of chronological systems and important finds dated to the Late Iron Age. Presentations are only in English.
- Syllabus
- 1. On the issue of ethnicity and "Celts" in the study of the Iron Age. Sources of knowledge about the La Tène Period. Historical reports of ancient authors on the Celts. Emergence og the Early La Tène culture. Rich "princely" burials of the Late Hallstatt Period. Contacts between the Transalpine and Mediterranean areas - the issue of "imports" (Greek and Etruscan). The concept of emergence and operation of the centralised sites in the 6th/5th cent.BC.
- 2. Celts in Greece and Asia Minor and reflection of the eastern expansion in the Central Europe. The chronological systems for the La Tène period.
- 3. The key-sites Hallstatt a Dürrnberg near Hallein. Lower Austria in the La Tène period.
- 4. The hilltop sites in the Danube area. Regnum Noricum. The collapse of the La Tène culture in the Danube area.
- 5. Raeti – the settlement of the Alps in the Late Iron Age. The La Tène period in the Swiss Plateau and Ticino - flat cemeteies; oppida. Case study - Basel Gasfabrik. The eponymous site La Tène and the ritual activities.
- 6. Celts in Italy. Historical reports about the expansion of Celtic tribes. Golasecca culture. Boii in the area of Italy in archaeological sources. Senoni, Cenomani and Insubri.
- 7. The La Tène period in France. Princely settlement and burial areas - case study: Vix. Burial rite in the Champagne region - graves with wagons.
- 8. Production centres in the La Tène period in France. Ritual activities. Oppida and the Caesar´s Commentaries on the Gallic War. The contacts with the classical civilisation in the South of the France.
- 9. Princely centres in the area of Germany at the turn of the Iron Ages - case study: Heuneburg. Hunsrück-Eiffel culture.
- 10. Rich female burials and the end of the rich burials in the Rhine area. The early La Tène period in Hesse and Baden-Württemberg - case study: Glauberg and Ipf. Early La Tène hillforts. Cemeteries and the oppida in Germany.
- 11. The Late La Tène period on the Iberian Peninsula - cultural exchange with neighbouring areas, the burial rite, enclosed settlements. La Tène culture/ objects in Poland, Zakarpattia Oblast, Hungaria and Romania.
- 12. British Isles in the late Iron Age: Arras culture and wagon graves. Aylesford culture. Oppida, rich burials and Roman conquest.
