Course objectives
The goal of the course is to develop in the students of Japanese studies skills and abilities of active work with Japanese texts through specifically linguistic texts. Students learn about language studies as discourse tightly bound within certain linguistic and cultural environment. In specialised classes selected aspects of the Japanese language are being discussed from various perspectives. The target topics change with each realisation of the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to define selected phenomena of the Japanese language; explain selected phenomena of the Japanese language with respect to both synchronic and diachronic point of view; apply his previous knowledge in metalinguistic approach to modern Japanese; distinguish the Japanese linguistics and some specifics of the Japanese language; formulate basic ideas about the relation between the system of language and culture; judge the extent of applicability of general linguistic theories to a description of Japanese language.

Teaching methods
Lecture with discussions on the selected topic. The base of the class is students' knowledge of Japanese language, as well as other languages; reaging and interpretation of selected linguistic texts.
Assessment methods
Final paper on a specified topic. Attendance of at least 70 % of classes is required.
