Course objectives
This course offers an outline of the Spanish Literature from the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. The aim of the course of Literature I is to make students acquainted with the background of the development and of the diversification of every literary movement within given periods.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to define basic notions of the literary context in question and connect literary questions with the non-literary considerations. Students should be able to classify a given author according to this context and they should duly comment on his/her importance for the literary scene. Moreover students will be able to imply and explain the functioning of basic literary phenomena and prove their opinions on a particular text.
Syllabus
  • Every lesson is divided into two parts: the 1st one offers a brief survey of the treated theme, while the 2nd one is dedicated to literary analysis of the most important works. PROGRAMA: 1. Realism. Historical context. The first Realist Generation. (Fernán Caballero, Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, Juan Valera y José María de Pereda)./ 2. Realism and Naturalism. The Secon generation (Emilia Pardo Bazán, Clarín, Armando Palacio Valdés, Benito Pérez Galdós y Blasco Ibáňez)./ 3. The 20th century. Historical context. Modernism (Rubén Darío, Manuel Machado y Juan Ramón Jiménez)./ 4. Generation 98 (Unamuno, Azorín,Baroja, Maeztu y Valle-Inclán)./ 5. Novecentism and Generation 14 (Ortega y Gasset, Eugenio d Ors, Gabriel Miró, Ramón Pérez de Ayala)./ 6. European Avant-garde and its influence in Spain (Ramón Gómez de la Serna)./ 7. Teaching methods
Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of comments the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a particular text.
Assessment methods
Attendance is compulsory. Regular homework and previous preparation of the assigned texts required. Active approach in classes is expected. Final exam: Written test (success rate 70%).
