- Course objectives
- The aim is to introduce students of librarianship into the current state of theory and practice of digital libraries.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand basic principles and context of standards, technologies and principles used in design and implementation of digital libraries.
- Syllabus
- Introduction to Digital Libraries (DLs); defining the DLs; comparing DLs with classic libraries and the web; history of DLs; sources of information on DLs.
- Digitization; basic concepts of digital imaging; hardware and software tools for digitization; digitization project organization; an example of digitized DL.
- General Framework and Architecture of a DL; Kahn-Wilensky Framework; digital object and digital repository; reference model DL.org; incorporating DL into a legal and social environment; hierarchical abstraction of intellectual works IFLA-FRBR.
- Global names and identifiers; classical library identifiers (ISBN, ISSN, ISTC, etc.) vs. digital identifiers (PURL, Handle, DOI); properties required for digital identifiers (global uniqueness, persistence, directionality).
- Metadata; classification of metadata; comparison and properties of classical (MARC) and network metadata schemas (Dublin Core, MODS, METS); XML and RDF.
- Interoperability; protocol Z39.50, SRW/SRU; Open Archives Initiative and OAI-PMH Metadata Harvesting Protocol; creating open and context-sensitive links between information sources - OpenURL and linking services.
- Global search for information sources; comparing DL and Internet search engines; federated search versus meta search; discovery services; semantic web.
- Economic and legal context of digital libraries; economic models for DLs; copyright; open access to scientific information (OA) and new open access initiatives; Creative Commons.
- Long-term preservation of digital information (digital preservation); risks in preserving digital information; basic archiving strategies; reference model OAIS.
