The completion of the course History of the Ancient Near East I - valid only for the students of Ancient History, students of other fields may enroll in the course disregarding this condition.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students into those aspects of history, society and culture of the Ancient Near Eastern states, which were not discussed in the one-semester course History of the Ancient Near East I.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be:
- able to compare both great and minor civilizations of the Ancient Near East in broader context
- capable of comparing the analogies and differences between the states founded by ethnics of unknown origin, the Semites and the Indo-Europeans.

  • 1) regarding minor Near Eastern civilizations
  • 2) regarding ancient Syria, Palestine and Phoenicia
  • 3) complementing the knowledge of ancient Mesopotamia

Teaching methods
Lectures accompanied by theoretical training of students.
Seminar: reading and analysis of sources, discussion.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation takes the form of a written examination aimed at testing student's insight into the topics explained during the semester. It is also necessary to prepare single-handedly at home.
The seminary evaluation is based on homework, active class participation and an essay.
For students, who have chosen exam as evaluation: It is only possible to register for the exam after successfully handing-in the essay!
