- Course objectives
- Continuation of normative grammar of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. The main aims of the course are to deepen the knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar with other morphological (names and verbs) and syntactic categories in order to move on to more complex texts. Students are encouraged to use electronic tools to work with Greek texts (dictionaries, databases).
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course); explain grammatical rules studied within the course; translate easy Greek texts using a dictionary; explain the functions of selected syntactic structures; recognizes aorist verbal stemms and finds the basic verbal form in the dictionary;
distinguish the opposition of the aspect in present and aorist;
will understand the formation of futur and can translate it into Czech;
will be familiar with the system of pronouns;
will be familiar with noun III. declination;
will know the formation and declension of adjectives;
will know the most frequent irregular verbs;
with the dictionary and grammar tables translate more complex Greek texts;
will understand the morphological and syntactic structures and will be able to adequately translate them into Czech. - Syllabus
- 1.-3. Strong aorist active and middle voice. The role of aorist.
- 4. Conditional clauses real and unreal perfective.
- 5.-6. Weak aorist active and middle voice.
- 7. Future tense active and mediopassive.
- 8.-9. Personal, relative, demonstrative and possesive pronouns.
- 10. Comparison of adjectives.
- 11.-12. Consonant stems: explosive and liquid sounds.
- 13. Declension of Greek proper names in Czech.

- Teaching methods
- Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, practice (grammar exercises), reading of simple Greek texts, drill.
- Assessment methods
- Students’ active attendance is necessary. Credits are obtained by passing a written test. The test consists of a short coherent Greek text translation (therefore it is necessary for the student to be familiar with the grammar of the first semester), a translation of sentences from Greek into Czech, an identification and translation of verbal forms and the declension of nouns and adjectives. Pass mark is 70%. Students can use grammar tables and dictionaries during the test.
