- Course objectives
- Analytical Mass Spectrometry. The course will provide mass spectrometry basics: ionization methods, mass analyzers, ion detectors with a focus on mass spectrometry of biomolecules (ionization methods MALDI, ESI) and modern instrumentation in mass spectrometry (TOFMS, ion traps, FTMS).

- 1. A Brief Historical Perspective: Overview of Techniques and Technology. Basic Concepts of MS (resolution, sensitivity). 2. Ionization Techniques and Sample Introduction: Electron Impact (EI). Chemical Ionization (CI). Glow Discharge. Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). Fast Atom Bombardment (FAB). Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). Thermospray (TSI). Electrospray (ESI). Laser Desorption (LD). Plasma Desorption (PD). Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI). Coupling of Separation and MS (on-line, off-line, chips) 3. Mass Spectrometers: Ion Optics. Simulation of Ion Movement (Simion). Energy Analyzers. Magnetic Sector. Quadrupole Mass Analyzer. Ion Cyclotron Resonance Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometer (FT-ICR-MS). Ion Trap (IT).
