Course objectives
The course comprises recent knowledge on structure and development of the Earth, especially of its crust and mantle. There are discussed older and new geological ideas concerning development of the crust, the accent is put on the plate tectonics.
Syllabus
  • 1.Definition of geotectonics, lithosphere, asthenosphere, tectonosphere. Crust, mantle, core. Oceanic and continental crust.
  • 2. Development of geological and geotectonic ideas before geosynclinal conception.
  • 3. Geosynclinal conception, etaps of its development, volcanism, sedimentation, metamorphosis, deformation.
  • 4. Wegener and his idea on continental drift.
  • 5. Plate tectonics, principal arguments.
  • 6. Divergent boundaries, types, morphology, seismicity, volcanism, sedimentation, metamorphosis.
