- The course is destined for students interested in practical use of recombinant DNA technology in molecular biotechnology. Enrolling in the course requires as a prerequisite the examination in the course Molecular Biology (Bi4020) and General Microbiology (Bi4090).

- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, the students should be able to explain principles of the use of recombinant DNA technology for gene manipulation and construction of genetically modified organisms producing commercial products. Using the acquired data they will be able to understand the different cloning systems used and their use in preparation of different commercial products. Based on the obtained knowledge, they will be able to assess and evaluate new genetically modified organisms.

- Relationship between chemical production and biotechnologies.
- Molecular biotechnology, emergence, definition. Molecular biotechnology biological systems.
- Recombinant DNA technology. Plasmid cloning vectors and their use.
- Creating and screening of gene libraries. Cloning DNA sequences that encode eucaryotic proteins.
- Vectors for cloning large fragments of DNA.
- Manipulation of gene expression in prokaryots. Strong and regulatable promotors.
- Increasing of protein stability. Fusion proteins.
- Translation expression vectors. DNA integration into host chromosome.
- Heterologous protein production in eukaryotic cells.
- Directed mutagenesis and protein engineering.
- Microbial molecular biotechnology. Molecular diagnostics.
- Production of therapeutic proteins. Nucleic acids as therapeutics. Vaccines - subunit, attenuated, vector.
- Production of small biological molecules, antibiotics and biopolymers.
- Bioremediation and utilisation of biomass. Plant growth promoting bacteria. Bacterial insecticides.

- Teaching methods
- Presentations in PowerPoint are used in the instruction. The course is followed up by a practical laboratory course.
- Assessment methods
- The course is closed with a test and a spoken exam. The test contains 60 questions, which must be answered briefly. Each student who has correctly answered 40 questions is qualified for the spoken exam. The student answers 2 to 3 questions in the exam. The overall result of the exam is evaluated by the examiner.
