- Special Biology (programme PřF, N-EXB, specialization Experimentální biologie živočichů a imunologie)
- Course objectives
- At the end of this course students should be able to: - understand principles and applications of modern methodologies of analytical cytometry such is flow cytometry, sorting, digital microscopy and microarrays; - understand basic principles of data analysis, their interpretation and presentation.
- Syllabus
- * Flow cytometry general introduction - basic principles and history (Karel Souček)
- * Principles of flow cytometry and sorting (Karel Souček) -fluorescence -excitation sources, optical systems and detection of fluorescence -signal processing and compensation -data visualization, analysis and presentation
- * Biological application of flow cytometry (Karel Souček) -cell biology (nucleic acid analysis, cell function analysis, principles and application of multiparametric methods) -cytogenetics -hydrobiology
- Flow cytometric methods in cell death analysis (Alena Vaculova)
- * Application of flow cytometry in clinical immunology and hematology (Lukáš Kubala)
- * Principles of digital microscopy (Eva Bártová) -fluorescent microscopy, confocal microscopy, temporally resolved -digital microscopy, time/frequency resolved digital microscopy
- * Clinical and biological applications of digital microscopy (Eva Bártová) -chromosomal and gene analysis -metabolism and cellular compartments analysis (pH, ions) -FRET and FRAP applications
- * Microarray analysis principles (Pavla Gajdušková) -DNA, RNA arrays -expression, gene and mutational arrays

- Teaching methods
- The lectures and discussions of the specialist with students are two most important parts of the course. The students will learn the principles of individual methodologies, and basic principles of data analysis. Practical demonstration of the instruments and equipments for flow cytometry and digital microscopy at the Institute of Biophysics in Brno is also included within the course.
- Assessment methods
- Course consist of lectures and two practical seminars. Every student will present short seminar. Form of exam is written test.
- Language of instruction
- Czech
- Further comments (probably available only in Czech)
- Study Materials
The course is taught annually.
