Course objectives
The course acquints students in detail with various types of volcanism in geological history of Moravia and Silesia from the Proterozoic to the Quaternary. Using petrographic and geochemical data, the volcanic activities are evaluated from the viewpoint of plate tectonics and in such way original geotectonic environment is deduced.
Syllabus
  • 1. Pliocene and Pleistocene alkaline volcanism at the SE margin of the Bohemian Massif.
  • 2. Carboniferous to Permian magmatic activity at the eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif.
  • 3. Devonian volcanism at the Drahany, Zábřeh, Nízký Jeseník Uplands and the Hrubý Jeseník Mts.
  • 4. Proterozoic volcanism and volcanism of uncertain age in the crystalline units in Moravia and Silesia.
  • 5. Tuffs and tufittes in Miocene sediments of the Carpathian Foredeep and Vienna Basin.
  • 6. Neovolcanites in the Magura Group of the Carpathian Flysh Belt in the Uherský Brod area.
  • 7. Teschenite - picrite association of the Cretaceous age in the Silesian Unit of the Carpathian Flysh Belt.
