- Course objectives
- Students of the course will get acquainted with the modern methods for studies of (bio)molecules using advanced spectroscopic and microscopic methods (FRET, UV/Vis, confocal microscopy, etc.)
- Syllabus

Theoretical background:
properties of light, interaction of light with matter, emission and absorption processes -
Physical principles of single-molecule detection:
spectroscopy and microscopy, light sources, detection and processing of very low signal, basics of low-temperature optical experiments. -
Single-molecule studies at low temperatures
molecular physics, solid matrix dynamics, non-linear and quantum optics. -
Single-molecule studies at room-temperatures
measurement of life-time of excited states, quantum transitions, polarization spectroscopy, diffusion, chemical reactions, charge transfer, Foerster excited energy transfer -
Application of single-molecule studies in biophysics, biochemistry and molecular biology:
enzymatic reaction, protein conformations, diffusion of lipids through membranes, function of ATP-ase, molecular engines, interactions of viruses with cell, photosynthetic systems. -
Additional single-molecule methods in biological research:
electron microscopy and single-particle analysis, AFM
