- Course objectives
- The course aims on the introduction of basic optical methods used in geological sciences in identifying minerals, rocks and fossils.
- Learning outcomes
- At the and of this course, students should be able to: independently work with polarisation microscope and binocular magnifying glass and work with basic principles of minerals optics, identify basic rock-forming minerals and microfossils.
- Syllabus
- 1. Basic information about optical property of minerals 2. Working with polarization microscope 3. Working with binocular magnifying microscope 4. Identification of basic minerals:quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, muscovite, biotite, olivine, pyroxene, hornblende 5. Identification of basic types of microfossils: Foraminifera, Ostracoda, Porifera, Conodonta
