- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is: - understanding the principles of ICP-MS analysis and its limitations, - knowledge of the main parts of the ICP-MS spectrometer and its functions, - idea of possibilities of analysis of geological samples by this method - preparation, sampling, interference, detection limits
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to: - evaluate the possibility of using the ICP-MS method for the analysis of a specific geological sample; - be able to compare the parameters of different ICP-MS spectrometers (resolution, type of detection, measurement speed...) - select suitable isotopes for measurement, evaluate possible spectral and non-spectral interferences; - consider the most advantageous sample preparation and plan for appropriate dilution during decomposition; - calculate the limits of detection and quantification for specific elements of interest.

- MS – general basics, ICP as ionization source ICP-MS in general, types of analyzers Sample introduction into ICP Calibration, internal standard, signal evaluation Spectral and non-spectral interferences Laser ablation Laser – sample interaction Application of laser ablation Geological samples, examples of analyses Practical acquaintance with the device Method setting, tuning

- theoretical preparation (lectures), demonstration in the laboratory, discussion, homework - research report on a selected geological sample and its analysis by the ICP-MS method
