Course objectives
Objective of the course is the introduction to several useful, especially computational methods such as thermobarometry and thermodynamic modeling, the use of image analysis for estimation of mineral and chemical composition of rock, mass balance in processes in open systems, the conversion of mineral composition of rock to chemical composition, and above all to practice the application of these methods in solving problems based on real situations. Each method will briefly explained, possible examples of its use will be introduced, and above all, each method will be applied to a model role. The course is suitable for students interested in various topics from petrology, mineralogy and geochemistry of minerals and rocks, as well as economic geology.

Note: The course will be given in four two-hour blocks
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- use individual methods to solve a wide range of topics;
- aply various methods to different chemical systems and various geological processes.
Syllabus
  • image analysis microphotography and its use to determine the percentage of minerals
  • The relationship between mineral and perennial composition (use of image analysis results to estimate the whole-body composition) - numerical conversion
  • mass balance of processes in   open systems - numerical and graphical solution
  • classical thermobarometry - utilization of the distribution of major elements in rock-forming minerals for the estimation of temperatures and pressures of the equilibrium mineral association
  • Solving feldspar thermometry and two-dimensional thermometry - Use of coexisting plagioclases and alkaline feldspar to estimate temperature (or ternary feldspar in high temperature rocks: numerical solution and use of modeling algorithm)
  • thermodynamic modeling in petrology - design of phase diagrams - so-called pseudosections and their use for thermobarometry and P-T development
  • use trace elements in   minerals for thermobarometry
