- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide a structured overview of the basic processes and concepts of human pathophysiology and related health outcomes, especially in the diseases with strong environmental influences.
- Learning outcomes
- After the completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the general physiological processes used by the body to maintain homeostasis 2. Describe the basic ethiopathogenesis of diseases, including the bodily response to adverse environmental factors 3. Explain the ethiopathogenesis of selected diseases and give the basic definition of the disease 4. Discuss the most important civilization diseases including their mechanisms and possible therapeutic actions.
- Syllabus
- 1. Common disease categories and terminology (characteristics and classification of diseases) 2. Diagnostic methodology (examination, medical history, differential diagnosis, aging and development in the context of diagnostics) 3. Inflammation (definition, mediators, infection, examples of diseases) 4. Basic immunology (basic pathways, mediators, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency) 5. Congenital, genetic and chromosomal diseases (causes, definitions, in utero damage, multifactorial inheritance, diagnosis) 6. Transmission of diseases (epidemiology, control of diseases, factors of pathogenicity, antibiotic therapy, viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic diseases) 7. Naoplasia (etiology, diagnosis, very brief introduction to classification of tumors) 8. Pathogenesis of cardiocirculatory diseases A (vascular diseases, cardiac diseases, coagulation disorders) 9. Pathogenesis of cardiocirculatory diseases B (congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, anemias, disorders of the venous system, lymphatic diseases) 10. Pathogenesis of reproductive diseases (female reproductive disorders, male reproductive disorders, pregnancy-related disorders) 11. Pathogenesis of pulmonary diseases (infectious diseases, obstructive diseases, restrictive diseases – asthma, COPD, carcinoma) 12. Gastrointestinal diseases (hepatic disorders, gastric disorders, intestinal disorders, idiopatic bowel inflammatory disease)

- Teaching methods
- Education is performed as lectures with Powerpoint presentation. Understanding of mechanisms and consequences is emphasized. Students are frequently asked questions to think about actual topic. They are encouraged to ask questions and be in interaction with the lecturer.
- Assessment methods
- Attendance of the lectures is not mandatory but strongly recommended for complete understanding of the educated subjects. During the lectures, students are asked about subjects of past lecture. Final assessment (at the end of semester) is by written examination. It is not multiple choice test but 50 questions, which frequently require description, explanation or schematization of asked topic. Questions have 1 - 3 points according to their difficulty. Total count is 100 and to pass at least 30 points are needed.
