- Prerequisites
- NOW( C7777 Handling chemical substances )
Small student groups (2-4 people) will work on a case study in teh field of environmental assessment and risk analysis. required knowledge in the field of environmental analytical chemistry, sampling methods and strategies, basic chemical and biological analyses in the environmental assessment and risk analysis. Additionally general knowledge about chemicals in the environment and tehir fate are required. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Environmental chemistry and toxicology (programme PřF, N-ZPZ)
- Environment and Health (programme PřF, N-ZPZ)
- Course objectives
- The aim is to perform a case study on selected topic in the field of environmental assessment. Student will work in small groups (2-4 people), define hypothesis and a plan how to prove the hypothesis in the frame of a case study. Afterwards the case study will be performed (sampling, number of samples, QA/QC, sample analysis, data analysis, evaluation of results) and processed.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing this course the student will be able to: - work in a small team and participate on the work management - design and perform a study to assess the environment (sampling plan, required material and chemicals for analysis, sample analysis – chemical or toxicological, quality assurance and quality control, data interpretation) - perform environmental pollution assessment - perform risk analysis using the data obtained propose possible remediation measures - present the results
- Syllabus
- 1) Introduction – lectures (environmental assessment, sampling strategies and design, risk analysis, legislation) 2) Case studies – examples 3) Selection of a topic for a case study (each topic has a consultant – one of teachers) 4) Students‘ independent work (study design, sampling, analysis, evaluation of results) 5) Case study presentation and defence , committee of peers and teachers and scientists

- Teaching methods
- The teaching is performed as introductory block of lectures followed by students’ setting small groups (max 4 students in one group). Afterwards topic are introduced. The focus is on the practical application of knowledge on environmental assessment. At the end a presentation/defence in front of peer and teachers committee will be performed.
- Assessment methods
- Evaluation is based on the assessment of the study report and presentation by peers and teachers.
